Oceanography: Physical, chemical, biological and geological aspects are carried out mainly in the estuarine and coastal areas as well as in the open sea. Remote sensing and mathematical modelling are also used.
Marine Environmental Quality: Case studies of marine pollution in Thailand and their impacts have been emphasized together with monitoring of the marine environment.
Aquaculture: Of major concern is the cultivation of economically important species. Environmental impacts on aquaculture, predators, parasites, genetics, physiology and diseases of cultured species are included.
Mangrove Ecology: Various aspects of the mangrove ecosystem, including biogeochemical processes, are studied. These research projects provide some guidelines for a mangrove ecosystem management.
Coral Reef and Seagrass Ecology: Interest coves species composition, distribution and the inter-specific and intra-specific relationships in coral reef and seagrass communities. Environmental impacts are also studied:-
Biodiversity of Marine Organism: Studies of taxonomic variation, distribution, biology and ecology of marine flora and fauna with emphasis on both economically important and ecologically sigificant groups of organism such as phytoplankton, zooplankton, marine invertebrates, fishes and marine mammals.
Harmful Algae: Areas of interest include the identification and cultivation of harmful species, causes and effects of phytoplankton bloom, bloom dynamics and toxin producing species.
Integrated Coastal Management: Problems encountered in the coastal areas both on land and in the sea could be solved or mitigated through integrated coastal management. Development of coastal areas could be sustained by integration approaches with careful environmental impact assessment. Remote sensing techniqueis also one of the very important tools to be used in problem analysis and setting up management plan. Conservation of coastal ecosystems would help in coastal fisheries production as well as assisting in sustainable development programmes.
Fisheries Biology and Fisheries Management: Biological studies of various economically important species are essential for stock management as well as for future proper aquaculture programmes. Genetics studies and biotechnological approaches would lead to successful aquaculture programmes. Deep sea fishing is also important for future expansion of Thai fisheries in the near future. |
